taking a break even if it kills me

Sometimes it is necessary to just get away even if it is just for a weekend. Tom and I went to Fernie this weekend which was awesome. Except for the drive out there...I arrived home Friday afternoon to Tom cleaning the house, which was awesome. I packed up a cooler (a.k.a “chilly bin” if you are a kiwi) and threw the rest of our stuff into a bag. Great right? Yeah it was until we got to Nanton and could not find the stupid turn off to Fernie. Here is the deal, we had google mapped the directions which was great and shows the shortest route. IT DOES NOT say that some roads may not be clearly marked so you may get lost, which we did. To make matters worse Tom’s car has a rather irritating squeak that we are unable to locate and it was squeaking as loud as possible while we were aimlessly driving around. Let me just say it was one long, long, looooooong drive.
But we did get there...but things only got worse.
So we finally get to Fernie and find our hotel. Yay! I went in to check in and then we carried all of our gear in. I look at the room across from us as I walk into our room and see 2 rather wasted young guys with really red eyes, banging on the door to be let in. “Oh hell no” is all I could think, I was not really in the mood for wasted kids. So I tell Tom that I am going to get them to switch our room because we need to be able to sleep. As I walk to the front desk one of the guys pulls the “HHeeeEEEEEY what are you doing?”. He is really lucky that I did not give him a black eye, at this point I was tired, grumpy and feeling rather hostile towards everything. I arrive at the front and ask for a new room because the room across the hall seems really loud, “Oh I don’t think we have another room....OH are you across from the ‘drunk room’?” Hmmmm I think if the staff at a hotel are calling a room the ‘drunk room’ we have a problem. Anyway they did change our room thank goodness. But wait there really is more, so we get our new keys and haul all of our stuff to the new room. I put the key in the door, it was one of those key cards and the light did not turn green. So I try the other one. Nope no green light. So Tom and I walk all the way back up the stairs to the front and tell them our keys are not working. They “fix” them and down the stairs we go again. Yeah you guessed it..they did not work again. At this point I am on the verge of having a breakdown and wondering why we even left Calgary. Finally after one more time of the keys not working we were given the master key. (How that was a good idea is beyond me, at least we are honest people) So we did get into our room and went straight to bed. That day needed to end.

But the rest of the weekend was awesome. The snowboarding was so much fun! Fernie was warm and although it rained on Saturday, Sunday was a great day. We ate a delicious meal at the Curry Bowl and even had time for a nap on Saturday afternoon. The hill was quiet on Sunday and Tom convinced me to try some jumps which I did. Ok, ok they were really small but hey, at least I am trying. After the fiasco that Friday was, the rest of the weekend was a real treat and Tom and I both agree that we need to take breaks more often.
